Discord was not blocked in Brazil: ANPD suspended live streams
If Google or a WhatsApp group told you “Discord was blocked in Brazil,” slow down: that is not what happened. On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) ordered the platform to suspend live streams in the country — Go Live and equivalent video-sharing features. Opening the app, joining a server, sending messages and hopping on a voice call still work.
G1 quoted the agency directly: Discord is not being blocked. The preventive measure suspends the live-stream feature in servers. The company has up to three business days to prove it complied. The suspension stays until Discord shows concrete measures to protect children and adolescents.
Why ANPD stepped in
The order followed the suicide of a 13-year-old girl. According to investigations reported by the press, she was allegedly induced to self-harm and suicide during streams in Discord groups. Police arrested five teenagers in several states, suspected of involvement.
ANPD cites failures to protect children and adolescents online, including exposure to content that promotes violence, self-harm and suicide. The week before, First Lady Janja da Silva argued Discord should be taken down “immediately.” That is political pressure — not the measure that was actually issued.
What Discord said
The company disagreed with the timing. In a statement to TecMundo it said it was disappointed by a “premature” measure: the case arrived on Friday the 7th and Discord was still within the deadline to respond. It also says it fights violence on the platform and had an open channel with the agency.
That does not cancel the order. Until ANPD accepts the child-protection measures, live streams stay suspended. Large fines or a full judicial block show up in coverage as a future risk if the company does not comply — not as what is in force today.
What changes for players
For a Free Fire, Roblox or Fortnite squad, HQ is still the same place. Ranking up, voice chat, text channels and community servers were not shut off. What goes away (or will, within ANPD's deadline) is streaming your screen via Go Live inside Discord.
- You do not need a VPN just to “open Discord” — the app was not taken offline in Brazil.
- Voice calls, chat and servers work the same as before.
- If you relied on Go Live to show gameplay in the server, use another path (OBS + YouTube/Twitch, for example).
- If Discord live fails in a few days, that is the ANPD order, not your PC.
What now?
The next chapter is bureaucratic: Discord has to prove child-protection measures and ANPD decides whether Go Live comes back. Treating this as “Brazil banned Discord” only spreads panic and useless VPN tutorials for people who just wanted to play with friends.
