What ping is and why it matters in your online games

If you've ever heard someone blame "the ping" for losing a match, it's not just an excuse — ping is one of the most important metrics in any online game, and understanding what it means helps diagnose why the game is lagging or enemies are "teleporting."
What the number actually measures
Ping is the time, in milliseconds (ms), that a data packet takes to travel from your device to the game server and back — also called latency. The lower the number, the faster the server receives your actions (shooting, moving, jumping) and returns the result to your screen.
- Below 50ms: great, practically imperceptible
- 50-100ms: good, you can still play comfortably in most genres
- 100-150ms: noticeable in games that require quick reactions (battle royale, shooters)
- Above 150ms: you can already feel the delay between pressing the button and the action happening
Ping isn't the same thing as internet speed
Having 300 Mbps internet doesn't guarantee low ping — speed (bandwidth) and latency (ping) are different things. A satellite connection, for example, can have decent bandwidth but high ping because of the physical distance to the satellite. What affects ping the most:
- Distance to the game server — that's why choosing the right region in the settings matters
- Type of connection: cable/fiber tends to have more stable ping than Wi-Fi, which in turn is more stable than mobile data
- Network congestion on your router — many devices downloading or streaming at the same time increases everyone's ping
Can it be improved?
- Connect via network cable whenever possible, instead of Wi-Fi
- Choose the server/region closest to you in the game's settings, when available
- Close downloads and streams on other devices on the same network before playing
- Restart your router periodically — accumulated memory issues can increase latency over time
None of these tips will bring your ping down to zero, but they help keep it consistent — what tends to be more annoying than the number itself is variation (jitter), when ping fluctuates a lot from match to match.
